"Not for nothing, when the Washington Post writes more articles about Joe Biden’s age in 3 days than it did about Donald Trump’s 34 felony convictions in 6 months, the only conclusion is that they want Donald Trump back in power.³ For a paper with the slogan, “Democracy Dies In Darkness,” that’s impossible to reconcile."

THIS 100%!! This is one reason why I wholly reject the notion that Democrats needed to message better during the election cycle. Even if they did message in a pitch perfect way would it have even been reported on? FUCK NO! It's not just the WaPo either....it's a whole slew of media outlets licking up Donnie's puddle.

They're trying to feed the orange alligator hoping it will eat them last. With Fascists, the media is the appetizer to the horrifying meal.

I totally agree with this. And that whole "Democrats need to be better at messaging" trope just pisses me off. It completely ignores the reality that the right wing has captured all of the major media in this country. Harris and Walz worked their asses off trying to figure out how to get their message out, around this billionaire brigade. If they'd had more time, maybe they could have pierced the veil, though we'll never know. But yeah, I got rid of my WaPo subscription a while ago, followed not that long after by the NYTimes. It really is mind-blowing to think about how pathological this kind of greed can be. Here are people who own some of the most wealth in the world, and it's not enough for them.

Yes, even if they were better at messaging the Dems would have the hurdle of an incredibly biased press to overcome.

But that can’t be used as an excuse for them to not get better at their messaging.

“We’d work on our messaging, but what’s the point?!” is just another way of saying “We welcome our racist overlords.”

I'm in agreement with this.

Fair enough, I'll amend my previous statement.

Messaging can always be better. I'd love to see them always talk about the CHIPS Act, the Rescue Plan, The Infrastructure Bill, Unemployment numbers, etc while also always talking about the attempted coup, stolen classified documents, 34 convictions, the (alleged) raping of kids, etc. Also, they could call out the conservative media bias by pointing out what they aren't reporting. They could brag ad nauseum. People also need to listen better and the media needs to report WAY better...it's not all on the Democrats.

Rachel Bitecofer is a whiz at political messaging. She’s absolutely right that using negative partisanship in attack ads is the best way for people to vote against someone (ie taking the GOP playbook and using it against them).

But since the 2024 election, she has been doomsaying a ton of stuff. And I had to stop following her.

Political pressure campaigns work and the Senate GOP said no to FDJT trying the recess appointment strategy for Hegeseth, Patel, et al. And while FDJT can do a lot of terrible things by incompetent staff and by EOs, any major legislation has to require 60 votes to pass (they can pass budget related bills by reconciliation but they have a razor thin majority). And Senate Rs aren’t likely to nuke that filibuster because it gives Ds the ability to pass legislation like DC statehood and judicial reform when they flip back control.

If he has to sell it to another billionaire, Bezos should sell it to Mark Cuban. Unlike other billionaires like Bezos and Zuckerberg, Cuban is an ethical person (and supports higher taxes). He would let the paper do actual journalism and criticize him if need be.

Cuban disrupted big pharma with his Cost plus drugs company. Seriously, in addition to Biden's IRA, that has really helped American people afford life saving medication. The other billionaires don't care about the little people.

When I saw Jen Rubin is leaving WaPo I thought...now they're really toast. Disappointing and embarrassing. I'm so glad I cancelled that rag. :(

Expand full comment

I didn’t know Rubin resigned until today. I thought for sure she would’ve left shortly after Bezos vetoed that cartoon criticizing him, Soong, Zuck and Disney kowtowing to FDJT.

Possibly took some time getting her new gang together…The Contrarian is what it called and there will be several great writers contributing.

I'm glad she's seeking new opportunities. She did an EXCELLENT job analyzing daily political news at WaPo (especially when 2016-2017 turned her into a hardcore Never Trumper) and breaking it down for people to understand it properly.

I agree.... I looked forward to her columns so much. But when WaPo became a rag, I had to cancel...and she was one of the few things I would miss. So I'm so glad she's here!

I follow Ann Telnaes’ s Substack Open Windows. Her cartoon showing all the rich boys groveling at #45’s feet was spot on.

I grew up with my hometown Washington Post and have considered it a paper of record all my life, until 2024, when I profanely cancelled my subscription.

In elementary school, we received expansive lessons on how to read the newspaper, where to find information about the actual business departments of the paper, and about each section of the paper. We had reports to write analyzing a particular section or piece that we found interesting and why. This was in elementary school! I'll bet they don't teach that now.

My cancelled subscription continues for a few more months, but with the Ann Telnaes bullshit, I am emotionally giving them the finger every day. What a tragic legacy for all those early reporters for the Post, and Times, too.

I stopped my WaPo subscription in 2023. Never went back and after his shenanigans spiking Madame VP's endorsement and the Ann Telnaes cartoon criticizing him, I will not subscribe or buy a WaPo paper under his ownership.

Fuck Jeff Bezos.

I’m so glad I stomped into the dining room one morning and told my husband, “That’s it, we’re canceling the Bezos Post and the Vichy Times!” As hard as it was to surrender a habit of a lifetime, there’s a feeling with the daily Biden Is So Terrible, However Did We Survive Him headlines, the resignation of Ann Telnaes, and just today, that of Jennifer Rubin, of watching on shore as the lights of a ship go out before it sinks.

Jen Rubin quite WaPo yesterday and started a Substack with Norm Eisen, btw. "The Contrarian".

I am very hopeful!!

If I ever meet Zuckerberg in person, I'll beat him with my seder plate. If he were in Egypt, he would not have deserved to go free.

Why waste a good Seder plate on MZ when a chipped ceramic pitcher is at hand?

Because it's as a Jew that I scorn him most. A guy with the last name Zuckerberg knows exactly what MAGA represents.

I don’t think MZ realizes that his money and privilege isn’t going to protect him from all this anti Semitism from major political figures.

Billionaires understand the assignment: Any media that allows liberal voices must be silenced.

Billionaires will get their rewards for doing this by having their other businesses favored with no regulations or taxes.

I suspect Tik Tok will be handed to a right wing billionaire too.

I've posted elsewhere how the last straw for me wasn't surprisingly the non-endorsement. I kept reading it under the category know thine enemy. Then they published George Will's Fuck You Jimmy Carter essay. This was after they spent the previous week fellating him for 50 years of essays. At that point I decided it was not worth it. I know what the enema's think and don't need to spend money to find out. The idiots tried to get me back offering to reup me for $120.00...I was paying $60.00 for my subscription. Apparently, every business aspect of the paper is incompetent.

George Will is a grouchy old conservative dinosaur whose main hobbies is talking baseball and complaining about Dems. He wouldn’t write a positive article about Jimmy Carter’s life even if you forced him at gunpoint to.

I am one who boycotted WaPo and NY Times!

Now we must ask ourselves, the

horrifying question….why did the elitists in the DNC jump on the bandwagon? Why did they not actively fight the lies? Why did they surreptitiously join the fray? Why did they not back the best President in my 77 years?

Why did they allow AG Garland to avoid prosecuting, trump and his fellow insurrectionists, in our Governing Body and SCOTUS?

Why did they not ban together

to force AG Garland to do his job, or resign?

Until these questions are fully answered the DNC has lost my contributions! #TermLimits

What's not being discussed is the anti Israel anti semitic trope that WaPo was reporting starting October 7. Their coverage was poorly researched poorly written and extremely prejudicial. During times of Israeli peril ratings soar on Fox and decline on CNN and NBC. It would be interesting to conduct research of advertisers and subscribers to examine if the same link exists. I for one cancelled and I know others as well
