Trans man here. Stayed up till 4am last night in fear, just doom scrolling and shaking after the "youth" gender affirming care ban came down. I'm, like, a really normal, average fucking guy, yk? I have a dog and a man cave, a wife, a rental house, a salary, friends, family. I buy records at the store, and overpriced groceries. I make dinner. I watch TV. I use my parents Netflix. I chat with baristas and buy Avocado toast. I'm a normal milennieal. But I just so happen to have been born a girl, found it to be an absolutely miserable experience where I didn't even feel like a real person, and went on a journey of self discovery and self love and self-creation and I came out the other size a nerd with a dad bod who is able to be a functional member of society and pay my taxes. If I hasn't transitioned, I'd be dead. So, to be entirely honest, I'm not surprised we became the fascist scapegoat but I am fuckin perturbed about it. I guess it's not like the Jews were doing anything in particular, either.

Sometimes just existing sets off the hateful who use cherry-picked bible verses to justify their hate.

Thanks for shouting our stories, Sir Ogre. I follow Erin In The Morn every day and to see that same story picked up and shouted from a different hill is very reassuring. I'm sure most won't notice until we start disappearing (or burning skyscrapers, we'll see what happens first), but thanks to you, a couple more people will start paying attention and that means the world to us canaries.

I’m so frightened for trans people and for everyone. Looking for an organization which supports trans and LGBTQ youth and young adults in my area to see if I can volunteer or provide financial or other support.

Support the Trevor Project. They provide help to LGBTQ youth.

Look up your local chapter of PFLAG. They have meetings and info.

Sadly there isn’t one locally, but I’m looking for something.

Hey, fellow trans guy here. Normal millennial dude, with a wife, kid, all that too.

I honestly think we're the target because we represent such a small minority. Most of us are invisible, but apparently trans gals make a great boogyman. Most folks aren't invested because they don't know (or don't know they know) anyone trans. It's hard to care about people you just learned existed, but it's really easy to be afraid of an "enemy" that looks exactly like everyone else. It's incredibly messed up, and works to normalize atrocities.

Most of us (trans folks) have cash app lol 😉😂

Expand full comment

Screw your cash app. Get your damned passport while you can.😳

Expand full comment

I really wish I would have done that before January 20....

Too late now, hopefully my old passport would still be accepted

Expand full comment

It's too late for that. They aren't issuing passports that don't match the gender you were assigned at birth anymore, and I would risk having my driver's license revoked as well. Texas wouldn't amend my birth certificate, I'd been trying since 2016 when I got my name and gender marker first changed. I don't even have a copy of my birth certificate right now. Also, where would I go? I have a family, we're on a fixed income, I'm disabled... I don't have a lot of options, other than hope I can fly under the radar long enough that either things are bad enough that another country will let me claim asylum, or this stops.

Expand full comment

Damn, sorry to hear that. If you had the original you could fly below the radar.

Let your people know to Not destroy their original birth certificates. ASAP.

One other thing you might try, it's a stretch but I'm brainstorming. We're you ever baptized or christened? If so, the church would have it documented and you can just say you lost your original birth certificate in a fire or your house got flooded.

I know, it's a stretch but when you're in a shitstorm, any port that's safe is good.

Take care and be safe.☺️

Expand full comment

I really appreciate it, thank you.

I wasn't baptized or anything as far as I know. At this point I'm not super worried about my birth certificate, I've moved states twice since changing my driver's license, and social security info.

Social Security is my one big concern if they're actively looking to change my gender marker back. Luckily it appears they're incredibly understaffed and bureaucracies aren't known for doing anything in a timely manner.

I don't know what's going to come of all this, and what the endgame is or if we'll ever see it get that far. My wife losing medicaid is a bigger threat at the moment. She's diabetic and insulin is incredibly expensive.

Anyway, someone has to stay and stand up, might as well be me. Existence is resistance.

It's just like the orange Shitler to lie egregiously to try to justify genocide. As a trans woman, I'm scared of the fact that he just might succeed. Hopefully people will start seeing through his lies before he does succeed. The chances of that might not be great, but I gotta hold on to whatever hope I have. Thanks to you, Opinionated Ogre, for calling attention to tRump's evil agenda.

Thank you for writing about trans people. I left the red state where my graduate program is because I had a bad feeling about being a politically outspoken trans man there and my heart breaks for the trans people still there. A lot of people don't hate us but the number of politicians who see no issue throwing us under the bus is so so disappointing.

TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS. That is the bottom line. I don't know any trans folk either, but I know a lot of gay men who cross dress at parties or do drag. I will defend their human rights to live as their authentic selves with my dying breath and that includes the trans community and all those lovely kids who will be put in so much danger by this evil. Peace and blessings to you all.

Yet again, another wonderful article about a terrible topic. You may admit that you don’t have any skin in the game, but you’ve done so much more for our community than many people with much more to lose. Thank you!

Ogre, its a bait and switch deal. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/gop-transgender-hatred-dont-look

Their hatred and genocidal tendencies cover up all their screw ups and fuck ups, as a “distraction” campaign. Although really they do want to erase us, but they also want to cover up their shit.

They’re doing a bang up job up showing their incompetence. The orders to stop funding both nationally and internationally is leading to chaos. They’re having to rescind their proclamations that they rushed into. It would be funny if it wasn’t so detrimental.

Same shit they always pull. Pick an already marginalized group and gin up their hounds. They don't give a fuck who they hurt, and the MAGA dogs don't care what else is happening as long as they have a bone to chew. If it's not happening to them, they don't give a rat's ass.

I saw a survey asking what percent of the US population is trans. MAGAs consistently way overestimate bc of how much their trainers scream about them.

They aren't joking unfortunately. Duck Suck is Commander In Chief of the military. Don't think for one minute he doesn't know at any time he can 'give orders' to our military and they won't be followed.

One observation: chances are you know way more trans people than you think you do. Unlike old granddaddies (moi!) who need to endlessly assert that they are Gay! Gay! Gay! Trans people are in the business of asserting their TRUE gender, not the one assigned them at birth, not their transness.

But, yeah, the language is despicable. It's completely in line with the fascist malarkey about "vermin poisoning our blood." Hillary was waaaay to kind in referring to the people who spouts these lies as "deplorables."

Hey, thank you for this article, and for everything you're writing and doing. I am 100% with you, and I like your style. I wanted to comment to point out that I've seen variations on the phrase "I don't know any trans people" several times from allies to the trans community in the last few days, and, respectfully, it's entirely possible that a lot of people DO know someone who is trans and are simply unaware of it.

I point this out simply because thinking "I don't know anyone trans but I support them" can serve to reinforce the idea that trans people are "other" in some subtle way. That trans people always look a certain way, or act a certain way, or wear certain things, or say certain things, and that one can always "tell" or will always know. While I don't at all think that this is what allies mean when they say this, the reality is that trans people are just...people. Living lives. So, it's entirely possible (and, in some cases, quite likely) that people know a trans person without being aware that the person is trans.

Someone we all know may very well be trans. Possibly someone we wouldn't "expect" to be trans, or wouldn't guess, or would be surprised by, and possibly people we value highly, respect professionally, rely on socially. Some trans people choose to be "stealth" for safety or personal reasons with some or most people they know socially or professionally, and I don't think it serves to assume that this is always readily apparent. Nor, of course, do I think anybody ought to be treating people poorly regardless of whether we "know" they are trans or not!

Expand full comment

I have someone in my general circle who came out as trans in their late 20s. We were all surprised, but totally supportive. They had been learning about themselves for some time. It was a process. So, no you can't "tell" if someone is trans. Or NB. And it doesn't matter. They are people. Just people. Like everyone else.

What’s totally ridiculous about all the BS about the ‘quality’ of the people whom the military requires, aside from the obvious fact that Hegseth doesn’t come close to any quality but low, is the fact that the military has quite a practice of sexual assault against (mostly) female service members. It has an equally well known record of failing to address sexual assaults within the service and covering up the same. That anyone can claim that our government gives a rat’s patoot about personal integrity within the military is a sad, sad, joke. That anyone can claim the Republican Party does is equally pathetic.

Well if you didn't know any trans people before there are a lot here who are eager to thank you. I'm one of them too. It means a lot seeing someone like you speak up. I hope others take the call.
