“If Trump had the kind of support he needed to do this, millions of Proud Boys would have been in the streets, beating up protesters on No Kings Day. But they weren’t. Isn’t that strange?”

Gotta say, I hadn’t made this connection, and I’m heartened by it.

That was my first thought at the Hands Off protest. I live in Michigan, we literally had armed protestors at the capitol to protest mask wearing a few years ago. But during Hands Off I didn't see a single counterprotestor. Not even nasty comments shouted from a car.

We had three counter protesters in Florida where I am, and a few-to-several cars that disagreed with democracy (shouted obscenities, middle fingers), but soo many more that honked their approval! So the ratio was excellent, esp for ruby-red FL!

In MI, I'm in a county so red, some people went to the next county to protest to avoid violence. But, you're right, as I've seen it talked about in other context...when it comes to really showing up & taking a stand, Maga did not, they hide behind their keyboards. Plenty to say online, but not willing to put themselves out there as adults, only where they can gang up & bully. They had their big Kid Rock festival because this county is so Maga & special, & the blue dots refrained from belittling them, but all kinds of hell was rained down over a Pride parade - online. So, this does show they aren't so big & badass as they try to appear. The acting out, ugly, vicious assholes are outnumbered.

I like the implication that a Kid Rock festival is the political opposite of a pride festival (especially in Michigan). Seems fair.

Sorry about your neighbors. But even they may run out of patience for MAGA by the time this administration is done.

There’s one more big thing brewing. Canada’s looking for their 55 missing citizens & getting stonewalled about what happened to the Canadian, Johnny Noviello, who just died in a FL eis detention.

Canada & other countries are talking about crimes against humanity. There is apparently one international human rights tribunal or org the US is a party to.

How odd that I just had to write those words I never thought I’d say about here.

Nobody's words carry more authority on the US than Canada's... this is a big deal.

It is hard to believe that my country may actually soon be under economic sanctions. (You know, aside from the silly North Korea type stuff.)

I hope this is what comes to pass.

However the MAGA’ts have a huge legal war chest supplemented by $100m in pro bono representation by some of America’s largest law firms and backed by the entire DOJ to contest EVERY Democrat win in 2026.

This is where they plan to block a change in party control in the mid terms.

Expand full comment
KaijaJo's avatar

I would question the legal war chest on whether it’s enforceable. First the law firms that challenged him won and the courts we very clearly calling out those that caved Second because the deals are illegal and done under duress and threats not sure a court would uphold them Third the brain drain from the firms in question. Several of the top litigators have resigned as have others. Should they be called upon to defend the BS many other attorneys are likely to simply leave.

In the end the deals may not be worth the paper they are written on

Christopher Foxx's avatar

The law firms that kissed Trump’s asshole are run by cowards. As Trump’s obvious weaknesses continue to show, and the strength of the opposition continues to grow, those same cowards will again back down.

It will require more backbone than they have to stand against the uprising and actually carry through with defending Trump pro bono.

Expand full comment
Miles vel Day's avatar

Great point regarding the brain drain. Even if you bend the partners to your will there's only so much they can do without their talent. It will be hilarious when the Trump University dreck that is left in those firms' rosters go get demolished in court even worse than the idiots did in 2020.

You know who wants to hire lawyers from the top law firms...? Literally every other law firm!

But hey Trump, you got the big name! White shoe! For free!

Agreed - I believe that you are correct in your assessments. The Republicans KNOW that the economic impacts of tariffs and other Trumpian moves have had their full impact - yet. They also know that more engagement with the Middle East war will put increasing stress on the economy. It’s another reason to push through the Murder budget now.

But - as you alluded to - Trump proved his willingness to save the Republicans on Capital Hill when Trump’s mob attacked the Capital. He didn’t act to save those loyal to him did he? No one will forget the two photos of Josh Hawley. One raising his fist in solitary with the mob and the other- running for his life - because mobs don’t differentiate... they just destroy. Trump didn’t care.

Who’s going to save the Republicans if they betray their constituents?

The billionaires have bunkers and offshore homes. What will Congress do if they betray their constituents??

I didn’t say we can’t win, I said they have figured out a way to circumvent or cheat (the vote)- but I think the odds are more challenging. Further, have you noticed that even when there is a win- it gets appealed? Unless elections are won well outside the margin of error- every congressional election will be appealed until SCOTUS sides with the King. I will not be fooled by optimism. I prefer realism

If we take back the house & senate, the very first act should be to impeach & remove alito, thomas, kavanaugh, roberts, barret & the other asshole! Can’t think of his name. They’ve trashed out constitution, they’re traitors to our country!

Expand full comment
Miles vel Day's avatar

It's really Alito and Thomas who belong in prison. Roberts, you can quibble over. (That would be kind of a RICO thing.) The others could just be impeached.

Really, I don't even care if ACB, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh stay on the court, as long as they're outnumbered by more rational jurists. They're... fine. No worse than Scalia. It's good that there is not a deep well of slime like Alito for the Federalist Society to reach into.

Alito and Thomas, as shameless sellouts and traitors, could be in legitimate trouble if the winds shift; the other four I think will be fine.

I do not know how they can fix elections but I’m betting that now that Musk and Trump have all our data they are working on it. If you don’t think republicans cheat then enjoy your delusion.

Expand full comment
Aliera81's avatar

They absolutely do and have cheated, but their preferred method is voter suppression. Dems have won so many special elections in the last few months, so it's hard to argue that they have the capability for large scale cheating directly. But they already told us they are purging voter rolls with AI, and I'm sure that will primarily be people of color.

I think it's really important to not give them power they don't have. We need to fight defeatism, they don't win unless we stop fighting.

(I also recommend Knitting Cult Lady if you want to know why martial law would be useless).

Where did I say Republicans don't cheat? It's all they have.

What I *did* do was challenge your declarative statement that they've already figured out how to steal the election. And rather than address that, rather than back it up or back down from it, you 1) move the goalpost and 2) misrepresent what I wrote.

Like declaring a speculation to be a truth, it's all very MAGA of you.

Expand full comment
Kathy H's avatar

Yeah, we already know they are cheating in every way possible. They are very much continuing to push ways to circumvent a fair election, but if it was a done deal they wouldn't have to keep trying so hard. There is plenty indicating that they thought the work was done, that they thought it was just a matter of swooping in & locking down control now. The tactic of chaos is losing power I think, their bad faith & bad practices are catching up with them. Singing Kumbaya didn't work, now we see if our ability is equal to their motivation to take everything.
