Well, the massacre at Wounded Knee killed 250. So there's another little known one. Wonder how many of us outspoken types will end up in those white box cars the conspiracy theorists were raving about 15 years ago? 🤔
We know about it …we all know about it Heather Cox Richardson has written a whole book about it. It’s horrific how this country treats its people of color no matter what.
Yeah. We know about it. How many Americans know about it. Or about other massacres committed by the US government? Have you heard of the Sand Creek, Colorado massacre, for just one.
I guess I’ve just been aware. Yes of course I’ve heard about Sand Creek. However, I did not know so many many many black, Negro African-American massacre unconscionable.
We ended up creating a system where all our journalism is done by rich kids who had a lot of money to blow on college, because with their trust funds and clean debt sheets they're the only ones who can afford to live an urban reporter lifestyle on the pitiable salaries they're paid. So it's not surprising that we end up with a press corps that sees politics as an inconsequential game, comfortable in the knowledge of their own safety.**
And of course once the Ivy League circles reach a critical mass of dominance in any sector they reinforce their own position relentlessly.
Ultimately it's the same problem as every other industry: consolidation. If there were more than three or four prestigious newspapers in the country*** they would have a more diverse set of writers and viewpoints, and it wouldn't be as big of a problem when outlets give into authoritarianism.
For those who don't have the born-wealthy's delusion of invincibility, consolidation also means reporters also have more to fear, both from the government and from vigilantes - major reporters end up on a very short list, and this is not a time you want to be on any lists. And if your boss fires you, the chances of finding an equivalent gig are nearly non-existent - so you'd better just go ahead and spike that story. Gotta eat.
** Yeah let's see, guys.
*** I am pretty sure this number is zero now, if you're talking about who actually deserves the prestige. Which is alarming, but would be more alarming if that didn't already match the approximate level of influence they have on the electorate.
Thank God for independent journalists keeping us informed of the important shit, like right wing militants infiltrating our govt. Timothy Snyder’s Chapter 6 in On Tyranny addresses this very issue.
Thanks for highlighting the Propublica piece. The subject matter is important as well as the fact that Propublica is one of the last truly independent sources of reliable information.

>> "I knew about Tulsa before Watchmen. I stupidly believed that was the only massacre of that scale." <
So did I, and so did I.
And I should have known better. Even knowing more now, there's always another story that's worse.
I agree thanks for the writing-legacy press go fuck yourself!
