It's really hard to make democracy work when 1/3 of voters are incurious and guilible and another 1/3 just don't care. Trump is not the disease. He is the most severe symptom of a much larger diagnosis.

Which is why we no longer have a democracy. We have an oligarchy. Everyone in Washington is paid off by special interest groups, Israel and oil being the biggest.

Terra M.'s avatar

We have never once been a democracy. Just a thin veneer of democracy for appearances.

We have had an oligarchy since the very beginning, just as the Founding Fathers (wealthy, white, land-owning gentry) intended. It's why we have the Electoral College. "We can't let the common rabble actually have a say in government! They will simply muck it all up!"

This is the disease I was referring to. The disease of hypocrisy, of lies, the rot at the very core of this country.

Terry24x's avatar

Is there a cure? Maybe civil war?

Ellen Franzen's avatar

I prefer secession.

Yes, you are right. Someone like Trump was elected into power by the "stupid." To call them the "disaffected" would be too generous. However, the icing on the cake were the "incurious" and the "just don't care." They are equally to blame for what has caused the destruction of America. I hope that I am far enough away in Canada to be less affected by this disaster of a regime.

Terra M.'s avatar

I wish I was there, too.

Andrea Mayhew's avatar

And he could care less. Neither does the regime

Johnathon Haney's avatar

He doesn't have enough of a mind left to care. The regime, on the other hand...

Put it this way: if they're not terrified at what's coming, they should be.

I hate to admit it, but I enjoyed watching Xi play Trump like the dolt that he is. Just like I enjoy the Iranian Lego videos.

Ellen Franzen's avatar

The Lego videos are the best!!!

There will be one difference this time, Double O: generational handover is going to complicate the electoral math after TACO's exit. Millennials and Gen Z are less likely to forgive and forget what these assholes put us through. And they're about to overtake Boomers at last so...

Kathryn's avatar

If their nefarious gerrymandering doesn’t work, we might prevail🤞🏼

We must hit the road and make sure everyone gets their vote in.

Johnathon Haney's avatar

Spoiler alert: likely will make things worse for the GOP. They call the games they're playing in the South "dummymanders" for a reason.

Ellen Franzen's avatar

I'm assuming the gerrymandering will work, but suppose people are so fed up with the economic situation by November that they refuse to vote for republicans? Could it happen? Of course, they could just fix the voting machines...

Johnathon Haney's avatar

Gerrymandering requires clear data, a complacent population and a unified party doing it so they can benefit. None of these things are true.

SomeNYDude (he/him)'s avatar

All true. The injustice we have created in the world is coming back to the US. Given the scale of injustice the blowback will continue for quite sometime. Look at the British regime. Stole from India, the richest country in the world. An empire that spanned continents over centuries. And now? About 70 million people in a state the size of Oregon in a corner of Europe with rising interest rates and another PM about to leave on short notice. Putin’s Reform Party picking up local election seats.

Xi utterly humilated Trump. For Obama, same height chairs. For Trump, remove one of the cushions so Xi is confident and sitting back, and Trump is lower and slouched over. China benefits from the US war on Iran.

The US reputation is in tatters and falling. It’s manic stock market won’t save it. The humiliation for Trump is beginning. He will beg to leave office when the universe is done with him.

jdRedBeard's avatar

I don't think Trump is even aware of how much he stinks. Yes, he does the FTD working against him. But more importantly, he exists in an information bubble, where everything is filtered through Fox News or his sycophantic cabinet.

As far as he knows, a little gerrymander here, some voter purges there, and everything will be fine. But, they can't cheat their way out of it this time..........

SomeNYDude (he/him)'s avatar

Correct, his FTD and malignant narcissism can not handle being a Loser. He will lash out worse. Dummymander’s will work against the GOP. It’s math. If you take a strong district and weaken it, you are hoping enough voters don’t vote that the gerrymander works. But… if enough people vote and vote against you, you’ll lose more seats than if you didn’t gerrymander.

Interesting question on Putin's UK puppets: when Putin is gone (as is looking more likely by the day, thank you so much, Ukraine), what will become of them?

The Opinionated Ogre's avatar

Depends on who takes control of Russia. If it's more of the same oligarch fascism, they'll keep pulling the strings. If the entire regime collapses and there's some kind of reform, or even a move towards less corruption, like in Hungary, they'll cut them loose and we'll see another collapse of the global right wing. Fingers crossed.

Calyx's avatar

But 70% of Rs still agree with him.

Sky Blue's avatar

That's only about 30% of ALL the VOTERS...

WE ARE NOT INTIMIDATED!!

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER!!

WE NEED to OVERWHELMINGLY VOTE ALL GOP maga MURDEROUS PEDOPHILE PROTECTORS OUT!!

And VOTE IN people who ACTUALLY CARE about AMERICA and AMERICANS!!

Johnathon Haney's avatar

Which is a BAD number. It needs to be 90% minimum for his agenda to be secure.

Hard to argue. À stupid ànd unpopular war is something that can happen to a nation, but if it is otherwise rational and well governed after the war is over it will recover. Trumpism however is dead set on wrecking absolutely everything that more or less worked: rule of law, immigration, medical science, anti-corruption, military alliances, trade, soft power. End to the war is like removing a single metastasis of a disseminated cancer.

SlatePath's avatar

His true floor is about 30% approval. That is the percent of Americans who identify or sympathize as Christian Nationalists. NOTHING will move these folks. But that is plenty low enough for a blue blowout in November.

Thank you for the common sense advice on stocking up before the supply chains are disrupted. I've been adding extra staples to my grocery cart that I know I will use in the long run. Yes, it makes the grocery bill hurt a little more, but it's giving me peace of mind. I was lucky enough to have received a heads-up a few days before the Covid shut down (and panic) began and it reduced my fear and anxiety to a negligible level. I'm looking at the coming weeks/months the same way.

Ellen Franzen's avatar

Being prepared is the best strategy. Always. Think forward. I've been stocking up since last August...

His poll numbers don’t matter any more - that’s why the corruption just gets more blatant. He and his enablers have crossed the point of no return, so they’ve got nothing more to lose. They will continue to plunder until they are forcibly stopped.

Hot Print's avatar

i tend to think polling is almost always wrong in this day and age, like asking 2000 people willing to answer a few questions is almost never indicative of public opinion, you can’t rely on everyone having a home phone, and people who publish surveys are rarely ‘neutral’ from a political perspective

Buck's avatar

numbers don’t matter. those with the most guns make the rules.

Johnathon Haney's avatar

...said the regime, who has been disproving that theory again and again for over a year.

You point the guns the wrong way? You waste the bullets on targets that do you more harm than good? You refuse to believe either of these things is true? Guns don't mean shit.
